RIVER OF LIFE
THE RIVER THAT MUST FLOW FROM WITHIN EVERY BELIEVER
Ezekiel 47:9 NKJV
(9) And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes.
Revelation 22:1 NKJV
(1) And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
There is a river that does not originate in man, nor is it sustained by human effort. It flows from the very throne of God. It is pure, it is living, and wherever it goes—it produces life.
This is not only poetic language but it is a spiritual reality that defines the life of every true believer.
THE SOURCE OF THE RIVER
John 7:38 NKJV
(38) He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

In Ezekiel’s vision, the river flows out from the temple. This symbolizes the dwelling place of God. In the New Covenant, this reality finds its fulfilment through Jesus Christ.
The river is not external—it is internal. It begins in the heart of a man who is yielded to God. But take note that the source is still the throne. We are not the origin of that river but we are the vessels through which that river flows.
If there is no flow, it is not a resource problem—it is a connection problem. The flow of the river within you is defined by your intimacy with the Lord.
This flow is cultivated and developed as you spend time in The Secret Place with God.
THE PROGRESSION OF THE RIVER
Ezekiel describes this river as a progressive deepening of the water flow:
- Ankle-deep
- Knee-deep
- Waist-deep (loins)
- Waters to swim in—a river that cannot be crossed
This is the journey of every believer.
- Ankle-Deep — The Walk
Ankle deep speaks of our daily conduct. This is where many believers begin their journey by adjusting behaviour, aligning their steps, and learning obedience. It is real, but it is shallow. A man can still control ankle-deep water.
- Knee-Deep — The Prayer Life
Here begins surrender. The knees represent intercession, dependence, and communion with God. Many never move beyond this stage developing a consistent prayer life.
- Waist-Deep — The Inner Life
This is the realm of the believers affections, desires, and passions. God begins to deal with that what drives you—not just what you do. Your love are purified. Your motives of the heart are exposed for what they are.
- Waters to Swim In — Total Surrender
When we as believers come the place of total surrender the river takes over. Control is lost. The current of the river within us determines the direction. This is the place of full union and fellowship with God.
Ezekiel 47:5 NKJV
(5) Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed.
This is where God is no longer an addition to your life—He becomes your life.
THE PURPOSE OF THE RIVER
Ezekiel 47:9 NKJV
(9) And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes.

The evidence of the river is life.
Dead things begin to live.
Barren places become fruitful.
Salt waters are healed.
Trees grow with leaves for healing.
Where the river flows, transformation follows.
This is the measure of true spiritual life in the believer — not activity, not language, not appearance — but life imparted to others. If nothing around you is changing, the river is not flowing as it should.
God has called us to be change agents in this world.
THE DANGER OF STAGNATION
The river is meant to flow. The moment the river is contained, restricted, or resisted, stagnation sets in.
Many believers live at the ankle level river for their entire lives. They are saved, but not completely surrendered. They have tasted God but not yielded. They contain what was meant to flow.
God never intended you to be a reservoir—He called you to be a river a river of life to those around you.
THE FINAL REALITY
Revelation 22 shows us the eternal picture—the same river, now fully revealed, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
What begins in you in this life is a foretaste of eternity. The question is not whether the river exists.
The question is:
How deep have you gone?
CONCLUSION
The invitation of God still stands.
The demand is there for you and me to step beyond the shallow places. You are called to move past controlled Christianity. Yield yourself to the current of God.
Because in the end, the testimony of a life that is truly yielded will be this:
WHEREVER THAT LIFE WENT… THINGS LIVED.
