THE ANATOMY OF SELF-SABOTAGE – PART 4 WHEN PRIDE RESISTS GRACE

THE PROUD MINDSET: WHEN PRIDE RESISTS GRACE

When Self-Exaltation Resists Correction, Humility, and Grace

INTRODUCTION

Pride is one of the most dangerous damaged mindsets because it often hides behind strength, confidence, knowledge, gifting, leadership, achievement, and even spirituality. A proud person may appear bold, successful, disciplined, intelligent, or deeply spiritual, yet inwardly the heart has become resistant to correction, independent from God, and closed to the voice of wisdom.

The proud mindset is not merely an attitude problem. It is a spiritual condition of the heart that places self at the centre. It says, “I know.” “I do not need help.” “Nobody can teach me.” “I only follow God,” while rejecting the very people, correction, counsel, and authority God may use to shape, mature, and protect the person.

Pride is self-sabotage because it blinds a person before it destroys them. It convinces them they are right even when they are wrong. It makes them defend what God wants them to repent of. It causes them to resist the process that was meant to save them.

Proverbs 16:18 NKJV
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”

James 4:6 NKJV

(6)  But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

Pride does not announce destruction immediately. It first produces hardness, blindness, arrogance, isolation, and resistance. The fall often comes later, but the root begins quietly in the heart.

DEFINITION OF THE PROUD MINDSET

The proud mindset is a mindset built on self-exaltation, independence from God, self-sufficiency, entitlement, and arrogance.

It is the inner belief that says, “I am enough in myself.” It does not necessarily deny God with its mouth, but it often denies Him through attitude, decisions, speech, and lifestyle.

A proud person may still pray, preach, serve, worship, and quote Scripture, but the question is this: can they be corrected? Can they be taught? Can they submit? Can they admit wrong? Can they repent without defending themselves? Can they honour others without feeling diminished?

Pride is not the same as confidence. Godly confidence rests in God. Pride rests in self. Godly confidence gives glory to God. Pride takes glory for itself. Godly confidence remains teachable. Pride becomes unreachable.

PRIDE AS A SPIRITUAL STRONGHOLD

Pride is one of the strongest mental and spiritual strongholds because it protects itself. Other damaged mindsets may cry out for help, but pride often refuses help. It creates an inner wall that keeps truth outside.

The proud mindset says:

  • “I do not need correction.”
  • “I already know this.”
  • “I hear from God for myself.”
  • “Nobody understands my level.”
  • “I am not like other people.”
  • “I do not need spiritual covering.”
  • “I only follow God.”

Some of these statements may sound spiritual, but they can become dangerous when they are used to avoid accountability, reject counsel, resist authority, and refuse correction.

The Bible teaches that God actively resists pride.

James 4:6 NKJV

(6)  But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

This is a sobering truth. Pride does not merely create problems with people. Pride creates resistance between the person and God. The proud person may think people are opposing them, but often the deeper issue is that God Himself is resisting the pride in them.

Proverbs 16:18 AMP

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

CONSEQUESNCES OF PRIDE IN THE LIFE AND HEART OF A BELIEVER:

  1. PRESUMTUOUS ACTIONS IN PEOPLE

EXAMPLE OF KING SAUL WHO USURPED SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY THROUGH HIS ACTIONS

1 Samuel 13:9 AMP

So Saul said, Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings. And he offered the

burnt offering [which he was forbidden to do].

In 1 Sam.10:8, Samuel instructed Saul to wait at Gilgal till he personally offered the

burnt and peace offerings to the Lord.

1 Samuel 10:8 AMP

You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer

burnt  offerings  and  to  sacrifice  peace  offerings.  You  shall  wait  seven  days  until  I come to you and show you what you shall do.

The  approaching  Philistine  army  and  the  agitation  of  his  men  pressurized  Saul  to foolishly offer the sacrifice on Samuel’s behalf.  Saul felt that because he was king he could usurp the spiritual authority of Samuel.  The burnt and peace offerings were offered as follows:

BURNT OFFERINGS

The offeror lays his hands on the head of the sacrificial animal.  The animal is killed

and the blood sprinkled on the altar. The entire animal except the skin is burnt on the

altar to indicate total consecration to the Lord.

 PEACE OFFERINGS

The offeror lays his hands on the head of the sacrificial animal.  The animal is killed.

The priest sprinkles the blood on the altar.    The offeror with the assistance of the priest offers the breast and right shoulder to God.    With the priest holding the offeror’s hand, the offeror waves the offering in the form of a cross.  The rest of the animal is given back to the offeror.    The offeror eats the remainder, symbolically partaking of God’s divine nature.

SYMBOLIC STATEMENT OF THE OFFERER

  • By offering the blood on the altar, he symbolically states, “My life is in you”. This is in accordance with Lev.17:11a, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood….”
  • By offering the breast on the altar, he symbolically states, “My hope is in you”. The breast symbolises hope.
  • By offering the right shoulder, he symbolically states, “My strength is in you”. The right shoulder symbolises strength.

THEREFORE THROUGH THESE OFFERINGS THE OFFERER STATES :-

I am yours ─────────── BURNT OFFERING

  1. My life is in you───My hope is in you───My strength is in you: speak of  the PEACE OFFERING.  I am now a partaker of your divine nature and am ready to go against the enemy.

BY CONTRAST

Saul did not wait for Samuel to sacrifice the offerings.  When he offered the shoulder and the breast, there was no priest to hold his hands when waving the offering.  In fact Saul had to hold his own hand, thereby rejecting the mediatorial role of Samuel.

THEREFORE, HIS STATEMENT WAS:-

  1. I am yours ──────── yet he did not listen to God’s servant Samuel.
  2. My life is in you, BUT my hope is in ME and my strength is in ME:

Because his hope and strength were in himself Saul felt he could take over the priestly duties of the prophet.

EXAMPLE OF KORAH

See the rebellion of Korah and friends (Read Num.16).    Korah and his friends rebelled against God’s appointed leader, Moses, accusing him falsely.

Numbers 16:3 NKJV

(3)  They gathered together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “You take too much upon yourselves, for all the congregation is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”

 Numbers 16:13 NKJV

(13)  Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you should keep acting like a prince over us?

Moses discerned that they desired the priesthood.

Numbers 16:10 NKJV

(10)  and that He has brought you near to Himself, you and all your brethren, the sons of Levi, with you? And are you seeking the priesthood also?

The ambition to be priests led to rebellion against Moses and Aaron.  The rebellion

indicated that they felt that they were more capable of leading Israel than God’s appointed leader, Moses.

EXAMPLE OF ISRAEL FAILING TO SEEK THE COUNSEL OF GOD AGAINST AI

The Israelites reduced the size of the army because of previous victory.  They did

not seek the counsel of God prior to the battle but relied on their own strength.

Joshua 7:3 AMP

And they returned to Joshua and said to him, Let not all the men go up; but let about

two thousand or three thousand go up and attack Ai; do not make the whole army toil

up there, for they of Ai are few.

The result was a humiliating defeat at the hands of a smaller army.

  1. DIFFERENT AREAS OF RUIN

Proverbs 16:18 AMP

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

WE SEE THIS IN THE AREAS OF

  • Social ruin
  • Mental ruin
  • Physical Ruin
  • Spiritual Ruin

SOCIAL RUIN

Proverbs 15:25 AMP

(25)  The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, But He will establish the boundary of the widow.

Because of a lack of accountability to anyone, a lack of involvement in the

needs of others and selfish desires, the proud person loses fellowship with the

body of Christ and becomes “alienated from the life of God”.

Ephesians 4:18 NKJV

(18)  having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;

EXAMPLES:

CAIN

Genesis 4:12 NKJV

(12)  When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

THE PRODIGAL SON

Luke 15:16 NKJV

(16)  And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

 MENTAL RUIN

Matthew 23:12 NKJV

(12)  And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

EXAMPLES:

NEBUCHADNEZZAR

Nebuchadnezzar was a powerful king. He ruled Babylon, possessed great authority, and had witnessed the power of God through Daniel and the Hebrew men. Yet his greatness became the very place where pride entered.

Daniel 4:30 NKJV
“The king spoke, saying, ‘Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honour of my majesty?’”

Nebuchadnezzar’s words reveal the anatomy of pride.

  • He said, “I have built.”
  • He said, “by my mighty power.”
  • He said, “for the honor of my majesty.”

There was no acknowledgement of God. No gratitude. No humility. No recognition that authority, ability, position, and opportunity are all entrusted by God.

Pride made Nebuchadnezzar see himself as the source of his greatness. The result was severe humiliation. He lost his sanity and lived like a beast until he lifted his eyes to heaven and acknowledged that God rules over the kingdoms of men.

Daniel 4:34 NKJV
“And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation.”

This is powerful. His understanding returned when his eyes were lifted to heaven. Pride lowers man into beastly behaviour, but humility restores spiritual understanding.

Nebuchadnezzar teaches us that pride can make an intelligent person irrational, a powerful person unstable, and a successful person spiritually blind.

THE PHARISEE — PRIDE THAT HID BEHIND RELIGION

Jesus gave a parable about two men who went to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee looked religious, disciplined, and outwardly righteous, but his prayer revealed a proud mindset.

Luke 18:11 NKJV
“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.’”

The Pharisee’s prayer was not true worship. It was self-congratulation in religious language. He was not really praying to God; he was praising himself before God.

Jesus continued:

Luke 18:12-14 NKJV

(12)  I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’

(13)  And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’

(14)  I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

PHYSICAL RUIN

Proverbs 11:2 NKJV

(2)  When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.

 EXAMPLES:

JUDAS chose suicide instead of true repentance.

Matthew 27:3-5 NKJV

(3)  Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

(4)  saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!

(5)  Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.

The Greek word of `repent’ is METANOES which means to change one’s mind or purpose (Vines: P961). The Greek for the word `repented’ in Matt.27:3 is

METAMELOMAI which means regret.  Judas merely regretted his actions.

True repentance involves the following steps :-

  • Conviction and confession implying a change of mind.
  • Conversion and commitment implying change of direction.

All Judas went through was an emotional experience with no confession, conversion or commitment to God.

Isaiah 3:16-17 NKJV

(16)  Moreover the LORD says: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, And walk with outstretched necks And wanton eyes, Walking and mincing as they go, Making a jingling with their feet,

(17)  Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the LORD will uncover their secret parts.”

SPIRITUAL RUIN

Proverbs 29:23 NKJV

(23)  A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

BACKSLIDING AND APOSTASY

Proverbs 14:14 NKJV

(14)  The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied from above.

Romans 1:22 NKJV

(22)  Professing to be wise, they became fools,

Romans 1:28-30 NKJV

(28)  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

(29)  being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers,

(30)  backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Romans 1:32 NKJV

(32)  who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Jesus by contrast grew mentally, physically, spiritually and socially.

Luke 2:52 NKJV

(52)  And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

INIQUITY

INIQUITY INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING: –

  • LAWLESSNESS

Isaiah 30:9 NKJV

(9)  That this is a rebellious people, Lying children, Children who will not hear the law of the LORD;

Mark 7:9 NKJV

(9)  He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

  • UNRIGHTEOUSNESS

Means impenitence: having or showing no regret or sorrow for sin or misbehaviour also being not in right standing with God and man.

Revelation 9:20-21 NKJV

(20)  But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.

(21)  And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Revelation 16:9 NKJV

(9)  And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

2 Kings 17:13-14 NKJV

(13)  Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah, by all of His prophets, every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.”

(14)  Nevertheless they would not hear, but stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God.

  • WRONGDOING

Psalms 10:2-3 NKJV

(2)  The wicked in his pride persecutes the poor; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised.

(3)  For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; He blesses the greedy and renounces the LORD.

Psalms 73:6-11 NKJV

(6)  Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment.

(7)  Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish.

(8)  They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak loftily.

(9)  They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth.

(10)  Therefore his people return here, And waters of a full cup are drained by them.

(11)  And they say, “How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?”

CONCLUSION

The proud mindset is one of the most destructive forms of self-sabotage because it causes a person to resist the very grace, correction,

From Orphanity to Dominion in Sonship
FINDING YOUR TRUE IDENTITY AS A SON OF GOD

counsel, and humility needed for restoration. Pride blinds the heart, hardens the will, isolates the believer from godly accountability, and places confidence in self rather than in God.

From Saul’s presumption, Korah’s rebellion, Israel’s failure at Ai, Nebuchadnezzar’s humiliation, and the Pharisee’s self-righteous prayer, Scripture repeatedly warns that pride always brings a person low. Yet the redemptive answer remains available: humility, repentance, submission, teachability, brokenness, and servanthood.

The proud mindset is broken when we return to the place of dependence upon God, acknowledge that all we have comes from Him, and allow His Word, His Spirit, and His appointed processes to correct and transform us.

The way upward in the Kingdom is always downward in humility, for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
