THE PURPOSE OF THE WORD OF GOD IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER

THE PURPOSE OF THE WORD OF GOD IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER

THE WORD OF GOD AND PROSPERITY IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER

 Psalms 1:1-3 NKJV

(1) Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

(2) But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

(3) He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

These verses hold simple wisdom: The more we delight in obeying God, the more fruitful we are. On the other hand, the more we allow those who ridicule God to affect our thoughts and attitudes, the more we separate ourselves from our source of nourishment. We must have contact with unbelievers if we are to witness to them, but we must not join in or imitate their sinful behaviour. If you want despair, spend time with mocking sinners; but if you want God’s blessing, make friends with those who love God and his Word.

The phrase, “they prosper in all they do,” does not mean immunity to failure or difficulties. Nor does it guarantee health, wealth, and happiness. What the Bible means by prosperity is this: When we apply God’s wisdom, the fruit (results or by- products) we bear will be good and will receive God’s approval. Just as a tree soaks up water and bears luscious fruit, we also are to soak up God’s Word, producing actions and attitudes that honour God. To achieve anything worthwhile, we must have God’s Word in our hearts.

Joshua 1:8 NKJV

(8) This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Many people think that prosperity and success come from having power, influential personal contacts, and a relentless desire to get ahead. But the strategy for gaining prosperity that God taught Joshua goes against such criteria. He said that to succeed Joshua must:

(1) be strong and courageous because the task ahead would not be easy,

(2) obey God’s law, and

(3) constantly read and study the Book of Instruction—God’s Word.

To be successful, follow God’s words to Joshua. You may not succeed by the world’s standards, but you will be a success in God’s eyes—and his opinion is most important.

THE WORD OF GOD BRINGS UNDERSTANDING AND SPIRITUAL INSIGHT

Psalms 119:130 NKJV

(130) The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

The primary purpose of the word of God is to provide illumination—offering insight and understanding valuable for navigating life. It serves as the external and customary means by which the Spirit of God imparts enlightenment to the minds of those who are sanctified.

God’s testimonies are remarkable not just for their greatness, but also because they serve as a guiding light in times of darkness.

When the word of God is internalized and given consideration, it provides clarity and understanding. Engaging with scriptural teachings enables a deeper awareness, even the foundational concepts and straightforward truths intended for new learners can significantly enlighten one’s perspective. Furthermore, the intricate doctrines contained within scripture offer even greater insight and intellectual illumination.

Psalms 119:104 NKJV

(104) Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

God’s Word makes us wise—wiser than our enemies and wiser than any teachers who ignore it. True wisdom goes beyond amassing knowledge; it is applying knowledge in a life-changing way. Intelligent or experienced people are not necessarily wise. Wisdom comes from allowing God’s teachings to guide us.

John 1:1-3 NKJV

(1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(2) He was in the beginning with God.

(3) All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Sometimes you might wonder if your life is too complicated for God to understand. But keep in mind that God created the universe, so nothing is beyond his ability. He made you, he is present today, and his love surpasses any challenge you encounter.

God’s creative power brings something out of nothing, and since we are his creations, there’s no reason for arrogance. You exist because God made you, and your talents are gifts from him. With God, you are unique and valuable; without him, you lose sight of your purpose and what makes you special.

JESUS CHRIST AS THE LIVING WORD OF GOD

John 1:14 NKJV

(14)  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

“The Word became flesh,” signifying that Christ assumed human form and consequently fulfilled three distinct roles:

  • As the perfect teacher, Jesus’ life exemplifies God’s perspective, providing guidance on how individuals should approach their own thinking (Philippians 2:5-11).
  • Serving as the perfect example, he offers a model for personal conduct and empowers individuals to live accordingly (1 Peter 2:21).
  • Acting as the perfect sacrifice, Jesus atoned for all sin through his death, thereby meeting God’s requirements for the removal of sin (Colossians 1:15-23).

When Jesus was conceived, God became a man. He was not part man and part God; he was completely human and completely divine (Colossians 2:9).

Before Christ came, people could know God partially. After Christ came, people could know God fully because he became visible and tangible in Christ.

Christ is the perfect expression of God in human form. The two most common errors people make about Jesus are to minimize his humanity or to minimize his divinity. Jesus is both God and man.

1 Peter 1:23 NKJV

(23) having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.

HOW THE WORD OF GOD CULTIVATES THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Doctrine of Obedience
Doctrine of Obedience

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NKJV

(6) And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

(7) You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

We should love God, reflect often on his commandments, and pass these teachings to our children by living according to his Word every day. It’s essential for parents—not just churches or Christian schools—to guide their children in learning from the Bible. The Bible offers countless ways to provide real-life lessons; limiting this study to once a week would be a missed opportunity. Children learn these timeless truths best within a caring, faith-driven home.

Job 28:28 NKJV

(28) And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’

Religion can be regarded as encompassing two principal aspects: performing good deeds and abstaining from wrongdoing. The former is reflected in the initial portion of this verse, while the latter is captured in the subsequent clause. This dual focus represents the highest form of knowledge or wisdom achievable by individuals during their lifetime. In concluding his discourse, Job does not aim to rebuke his friends for their audacity in probing divine mysteries or issuing hasty judgments about him and God’s actions. Rather, he seeks to defend himself against accusations of hypocrisy by demonstrating that he has consistently considered reverence for God and avoidance of evil to be the most prudent approach to wisdom.

THE WORD OF GOD AS PROTECTION AGAINST DECEPTION

Hosea 4:6 NKJV

(6) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

DOCTRINE OF DEVILS
DOCTRINE OF DEVILS

It is noted that religious leaders were held accountable for preventing the people from developing an understanding of God. Although their role was intended to promote spiritual guidance, they instead became examples of inappropriate conduct. Observing the actions of priests, some individuals may have assumed such behaviour was permissible. Spiritual leadership carries significant responsibility. Whether instructing in a church classroom, holding an office within the church, or facilitating a Bible study, it is essential to approach these duties conscientiously. Effective leaders are those who guide others toward a stronger relationship with God.

The study of the Word of God bring about your protection from such deceit.

Ephesians 6:17 NKJV

(17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Within Christian doctrine, believers are considered to contend with spiritual rulers and authorities. To effectively confront such challenges, reliance on divine strength and the application of every component of spiritual armor is advised. The apostle Paul addresses these recommendations not only to the church as a collective, but also to each individual member. It is essential that the entire community be prepared. When encountering spiritual adversities, individuals are encouraged to draw upon the collective strength of the church, which derives its power from the Holy Spirit.

THE WORD OF GOD AS GUIDANCE AND DIRECTION FOR DAILY LIVING

Psalms 119:105 NKJV

(105) Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

If you want to walk safely through the woods at night, you’ll need a light to avoid tripping over roots or falling into holes. Likewise, life can feel like navigating a dark forest filled with dangers. The Word serves as a guide, lighting your path so you don’t lose your way. It uncovers the hidden traps of false beliefs and misleading values. By studying the Word, you can see clearly enough to stay on course and make wise decisions.

SANCTIFICATION THROUGH THE TRUTH OF GOD’S WORD

John 17:17 NKJV

(17) Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

By believing and following God’s Word a follower of Christ becomes pure and holy, having already received forgiveness through Christ’s sacrifice.

Applying scripture daily helps to cleanse our minds and hearts. The Bible highlights areas of sin, encourages confession, restores our connection with Christ, and directs us toward the right path.

Hebrews 4:12 NKJV

(12) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Ephesians 5:26 NKJV

(26) that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND MATURITY THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD

Acts 20:32 NKJV

(32) So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

The word of His grace serves as the primary means through which believers and unbelievers alike receive spiritual guidance. It possesses the capacity to strengthen and advance faith, love, and holiness. While God is capable of building us up without any intermediary, He often employs various instruments for this purpose. It is important to recognize that the need for human instruction remains essential even after one comes to know Christ.

Furthermore, the word grants an inheritance of eternal glory among those who are sanctified and thus prepared for it. Paul was likely acquainted with many of these individuals and remembered them in his prayers before God.

Romans 15:4 NKJV

(4) For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

Understanding the Scriptures shapes how we view today and tomorrow. Knowing God’s actions in the past builds our trust in what He will do next, so regular Bible reading helps us believe His plans are best.

THE ROLE OF THE WORD OF GOD IN SALVATION AND THE NEW BIRTH

Romans 10:17 NKJV

ASSURANCE OF SALVATION

(17) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith develops from hearing, which means listening to preaching; and hearing is made possible through God’s word;

1 Peter 1:23 NKJV

(23) having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.

1 Peter 1:23 teaches that:

  • Salvation is a spiritual rebirth, not a natural process.
  • This new life does not originate from human effort, but from God.
  • God brings about this rebirth through His living and eternal Word.
  • Because the Word is eternal, the believer’s new life is secure, lasting, and imperishable.

THE ETERNAL AND LIVING NATURE OF THE WORD OF GOD

The Word of God is central to every aspect of the believer’s life. Through it, God brings salvation, produces spiritual growth, grants understanding, provides protection, and gives clear guidance for daily living.

The Scriptures are not merely informative; they are living, powerful, and active—working within the believer to bring transformation, sanctification, and lasting fruit. From new birth to spiritual maturity, every stage of the Christian journey is sustained by the eternal Word of God.

As believers continually engage with the Word—meditating on it, obeying it, and allowing it to dwell richly within them— we are equipped to walk in wisdom, resist deception, and live lives that honour God.

The Word directs our paths, shapes our character, strengthens our faith, and aligns our hearts with God’s will. It cultivates reverence for the Lord and enables believers to discern truth from error in a world filled with spiritual darkness.

Ultimately, the Word of God serves to nurture growth, provide insight, offer protection, guide actions, promote sanctification, support development, and deliver salvation.

A life grounded in Scripture reflects the nature and principles of Christ and actively contributes to the advancement of His Kingdom. Therefore, every believer is encouraged to remain steadfast in the Word, knowing that it lives, abides forever, and will accomplish God’s purpose in those who receive it.
