SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT AND PERCEPTION: THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPIRITUAL SIGHT
Isaiah 6:1 NKJV
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.
When Uzziah died, spiritual sight was restored to Isaiah.
Uzziah became exceptionally strong and successful, but this led to arrogance. His attempt to perform priestly duties in the temple was a violation of God’s law. That shows us that spiritual pride can cause one to overstep boundaries, leading to a loss of divine blessing.
In order for the spiritual sight to be restored Uzziah had to die. In order for you and me to truly discern the Lord every form of pride in us need to be removed. In a spiritual sense, the death of King Uzziah can be interpreted as the death of human strength or confidence. As noted in Isaiah 6, it was only when King Uzziah died—when the earthly king was gone—that the prophet saw the true King, the Lord sitting on the throne.
One of the greatest needs in the Body of Christ today is not more information—but rather accurate perception. Spiritual maturity is not measured by your activity, but by discernment. Your ability to perceive what God is saying, doing, and requiring of you.
Hebrews 5:14 KJV
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age… to discern both good and evil.”
There are certain aspects that you and I as individual believers need to discern in order to ensure accurate spiritual sight and discernment in our walk.
THE PRIORITY GOD IS PLACING UPON US
The church in Ephesus was rebuked for missing her priority.

Revelation 2:4-5 NKJV
(4) Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
(5) Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
Mark 12:30 NKJV
AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ This is the first commandment.
The instruction from the Lord is precise and clear and that is that we need to love Him first.
THE EXTENT OF GRACE UPON US
Romans 12:3 NKJV
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
As believers we need to consider and discern what gifts, abilities, light, and knowledge we have received from God and we need to operate and function within that measure of faith we have received.
Operate within your God-given grace.
RIGHT AND WRONG – DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
Hebrews 5:14 NKJV
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
1 Kings 3:9 NKJV
Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
We need to ask the Lord to grant us the ability to discern good and evil while also seeking understanding from Him. We need to walk in that level of intimacy with God that we see good and evil as God sees it and act accordingly through His grace.
CONDITION OF YOUR TRUE SPIRITUAL STATE
Revelation 3:17 NKJV
Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—
Some believers assume that numerous material possessions are a sign of God’s spiritual blessing. Laodicea was a wealthy city, and the church was also wealthy. But what the Laodiceans could see and buy had become more valuable to them than what is unseen and eternal. Wealth, luxury, and ease can make people feel confident, satisfied, and complacent. But no matter how much you possess or how much money you make, you have nothing if you don’t have a vital relationship with Christ.
How does your current level of wealth affect your spiritual desire? Instead of centering your life primarily on comfort and luxury, find your true riches in Christ.
The demand for us as believers is to discern our true spiritual condition.
EXPECTATION OF GOD AND UNDERSTANDING THE WILL OF GOD FOR YOUR LIFE
Romans 12:2 NKJV

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Paul warned Christians: “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world” that are usually selfish and often corrupting. Wise Christians decide that much worldly behaviour is off-limits for them. Our refusal to conform to this world’s values, however, must go even deeper than just behaviour and customs; it must be firmly planted in our mind: “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” It is possible to avoid most worldly customs and still be proud, covetous, selfish, stubborn, and arrogant. Only when the Holy Spirit renews, re-educates, and redirects our mind are we truly transformed
WE NEED TO DISCERN AND KNOW THE WILL OF GOD FOR US
DISCERN AND KNOW YOUR PURPOSE AND CALLING
1 Chronicles 14:2 NKJV
So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of His people Israel.
David perceived his calling.
God gave David honour and success, but not simply for David’s personal gain. David realized that God had prospered him for a special reason—for the sake of God’s people!
Often we are tempted to use our position or possessions only for our own good. Instead, we must remember that God has placed us where we are and given us all we have so that we may encourage others and give to those in need.
As believers we have a mandate and calling from the Lord that must be executed. In order to be effective in that we need to discern that purpose and calling.
Being connected to a spiritual father that can guide and direct you is of great benefit.
TIMES AND SEASONS
Ecclesiastes 8:5 NKJV
He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful; And a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment,
We must discern the times of His visitation.
We must be able to discern the times and the seasons of the Lord especially in our lives.
It is of great importance to be able to discern When and How both to speak and act. Once both time and manner are established, the next step is to address the matter. What should I say? What actions should I take? Addressing the questions of when, how, and what require careful consideration of timing, approach, and purpose. The ability to discern these matters and respond appropriately is an ongoing responsibility for every believer.
Discern the timing of the Lord at all times.
INTERNAL UNCTION AND ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1 John 2:20 NKJV
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
The Holy Spirit reveals error to guard us from deception. Yet it remains our responsibility to teach the Word of God with clarity and care—especially to those who are vulnerable or less established—so that they are not misled by false teachers who appear gentle and harmless, yet inwardly are destructive wolves.
John 10:27 NKJV
(27) My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
This verse reveals the essence of true relationship between Christ and His people—it is not mere religion, but living communion marked by recognition, intimacy, and obedience.
“My sheep hear My voice”
To hear His voice is more than an outward listening; it is a spiritual perception that flows from faith. The true sheep of Christ are those whose hearts have been awakened by the Spirit, enabling them to discern His voice through His Word. This hearing is not passive—it is responsive. It carries the idea of receiving, embracing, and yielding to what He says. In a world filled with competing voices, the sheep of Christ are distinguished by their ability to recognize truth and reject deception.
“And I know them”
This knowing is not intellectual awareness, but relational approval. It speaks of intimacy, covenant, and divine recognition. Christ knows those who love Him—He acknowledges them as His own. This knowing implies acceptance and delight, but also accountability, for those who belong to Him walk in alignment with His heart. It is the assurance that the believer is not hidden or forgotten, but fully seen and embraced by the Shepherd.
“And they follow Me”
Following Christ is the outward evidence of hearing and being known. It is a life of obedience—walking in His ways, keeping His commandments, and surrendering to His leading. This is not forced compliance, but willing devotion flowing from love. True discipleship is not occasional agreement but continual pursuit. The sheep do not lead themselves; they trust the Shepherd’s direction, even when the path is narrow or costly.
These are inseparable. One cannot claim to hear His voice without following Him, nor follow Him without being known by Him.
This truth calls for responsibility. The voice of the Shepherd must be clearly taught and faithfully represented, especially to those who are weak or still growing, so they are not deceived by false voices that imitate truth but lead to destruction.
John 10:27 is a defining mark of a true disciple: a life that hears His voice, is known by Him, and faithfully follows Him.
DISCERNING THE OPERATING SYSTEMS IN THE CHURCH AND YOUR ENVIRONMENT
We need to discern both within the church and in the secular world the spiritual operating systems such as Jezebel, Absalom, Korah, Adonijah, religion, Babylon, Nicolaitanism etc.
NATURAL VS SPIRITUAL
1 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
The natural mind cannot understand spiritual truth—only the Spirit of God enables true discernment between what is natural and what is spiritual.
Discern beyond appearances.
One could be naturally correct yet spiritually incorrect.
IN CONCLUSION – THE CALL TO SEE CLEARLY
Revelation 3:18 NKJV
(18) I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.
Lord, give us sight.
Spiritual sight is not automatic—it must be received from Him. True discernment is birthed through refinement, clothed in righteousness, and awakened by the Spirit.
We are called to move beyond natural perception and into divine clarity—where we see as He sees, judge as He judges, and walk free from deception. The responsibility rests on us to seek this anointing, to allow Him to purify our hearts, and to open our eyes so that we may discern rightly in a world filled with illusion.
Only then will we truly see.
