The Transforming Power of God’s Presence

THE TRANSFORMING RESULTS OF HOSTING GOD’S PRESENCE IN YOUR LIFE

 INTRODUCTION TO GOD’S PRESENCE

The presence of God is not merely a theological idea, an emotional experience, or a moment of spiritual excitement. God’s presence is life-changing. When He is welcomed, honoured, and obeyed, His presence produces visible results in individuals, families, churches, cities, and nations.

God is omnipresent—He is always present everywhere. Yet Scripture also reveals occasions when His presence becomes distinctly evident through His activity, power, glory, holiness, wisdom, and intervention. This is often described as the manifest presence of God: the recognisable revelation of God among His people.

When God revealed His presence to Moses, the encounter transformed him. When God’s presence rested upon the tabernacle, His glory filled it. When His presence accompanied Israel, enemies were defeated and provision was released. When His presence filled the early Church, believers were strengthened, sinners were convicted, miracles occurred, and the gospel advanced.

The presence of God is not intended merely to make us feel better. It comes to make us different.

It changes the atmosphere of a home. It purifies motives. It strengthens weak hearts. It exposes darkness. It produces spiritual fruitfulness. It draws people to Christ. It releases divine power and breaks oppressive bondage.

The following are the effects that emerge when people submit themselves to God’s authority, cultivate fellowship with Him, honour His Word, and allow the Holy Spirit to govern their lives.

PRODUCTIVE FLOURISHING THROUGH GOD’S PRESENCE

THE SECRET PLACE

Genesis 39:2–3 NKJV

(2) The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

(3) And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand.

Joseph’s life demonstrates that true biblical flourishing begins with the presence of God.

Joseph was not in favourable circumstances. He had been betrayed by his brothers, separated from his father, sold into slavery, taken into a foreign land, and placed in the house of an Egyptian master. From a natural perspective, Joseph appeared to have lost everything.

Yet Scripture makes an extraordinary statement: “The LORD was with Joseph.”

The defining feature of Joseph’s life was not his location, position, title, income, or social standing. It was the presence of God.

Joseph was physically enslaved, but he remained spiritually favoured. He was in a foreign house, but heaven was with him. He had no visible inheritance, yet the blessing of God rested upon the work of his hands.

God’s presence enabled Joseph to become fruitful in an environment that should have destroyed him.

This teaches us that biblical flourishing is not limited to financial wealth. It includes:

  • Spiritual growth
  • Wisdom in decision-making
  • Fruitfulness in service
  • Order within the household
  • Grace in relationships
  • Strength during adversity
  • Integrity under pressure
  • Progress in God-given assignments
  • The ability to bless others

Joseph did not merely receive blessings for himself. The household in which he served became blessed because God was with him. This is an important characteristic of divine flourishing: it does not terminate upon the individual. It spreads into the surrounding environment.

When God’s presence rests upon a person, that person should become a source of life, wisdom, stability, righteousness, and blessing to others.

Obed-Edom experienced this same reality when the ark of God remained in his house.

 2 Samuel 6:11–12 NKJV

(11) The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his household.

(12) Now it was told King David, saying, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness.

The presence of God affected everything connected to Obed-Edom. His household became a testimony of what happens when God is welcomed and honoured.

This does not mean that believers will never face hardship. Joseph faced betrayal, false accusation, imprisonment, and delay. However, hardship could not cancel the covenantal presence of God upon his life.

The evidence of God’s presence is not the absence of difficulty. It is the presence of divine grace, wisdom, favour, endurance, and fruitfulness within difficulty.

 RESPECTFUL AWE

 Acts 9:31 NKJV

(31) Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the

INTIMACY WITH GOD
INTIMACY WITH GOD

comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

The presence of God produces a deep awareness of His holiness, majesty, authority, and power. This awareness is not the terror of a condemned sinner expecting destruction. Through Christ, believers have been reconciled to God and delivered from condemnation. Nevertheless, grace does not make God common. Intimacy with God should never produce carelessness toward Him.

Healthy spiritual intimacy combines love with honour, confidence with humility, and access with reverence.

The fear of the Lord is a respectful awe that recognises who God is. It causes us to take His Word seriously, honour holy things, reject evil, and live with the consciousness that our lives are continually open before Him.

Hebrews 12:28–29 NKJV

(28) Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

(29) For our God is a consuming fire.

The early Church walked both in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit. These two realities were not contradictory.

  • The fear of the Lord kept the Church pure.
  • The comfort of the Holy Spirit kept the Church encouraged.

Reverence protected them from presumption, while divine comfort protected them from condemnation.

One of the dangers of prolonged exposure to spiritual activity is familiarity. People can become familiar with worship, prayer, preaching, communion, spiritual leadership, Scripture, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. What was once approached with gratitude can gradually be treated casually.

Familiarity causes people to handle holy things without discernment. They may speak carelessly about spiritual matters, resist correction, dishonour leadership, approach worship mechanically, or participate in ministry without examining their hearts.

The presence of God confronts this casual attitude. It reminds us that God is loving, but He is also holy. He is our Father, but He is also King. He welcomes us near, but He calls us to approach Him with clean hands and a pure heart.

Respectful awe produces the following:

  • Hatred for evil
  • Love for righteousness
  • Carefulness in speech
  • Integrity in private
  • Humility before God
  • Honour for spiritual things
  • Sensitivity to conviction
  • Willingness to repent
  • Obedience to Scripture

A Church that loses its sense of God’s holiness may continue with religious activity, but it will gradually lose spiritual purity, authority, and discernment.

 EMPOWERING STRENGTH

 Psalm 27:14 NKJV

(14) Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!

God’s presence strengthens His people from within.  There are seasons when external circumstances may not change immediately, but God strengthens the heart of the believer so that the circumstances no longer possess the power to destroy faith.

Waiting upon the Lord is not passive resignation. It is the deliberate positioning of the heart before God. It is choosing to remain faithful, prayerful, hopeful, and obedient while trusting God’s timing.

David knew what it meant to strengthen himself in the Lord. When David and his men returned to Ziklag, they discovered that the city had been burnt and their families taken captive. His own men became so distressed that they spoke of stoning him. David had no human encouragement available. In that moment, he turned toward God.

 1 Samuel 30:6 NKJV

(6) Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

David did not deny the seriousness of the situation. He wept, grieved, and felt the pressure. Yet he refused to allow distress to become his final authority.

He found strength in God.

The presence of God supplies strength for the following:

  • Enduring prolonged trials
  • Resisting temptation
  • Continuing in obedience
  • Forgiving those who have caused pain
  • Standing when others withdraw
  • Carrying spiritual responsibility
  • Overcoming discouragement
  • Remaining faithful during delay
  • Confronting opposition
  • Finishing an assignment

Paul experienced this strengthening presence when others abandoned him.

 2 Timothy 4:17 NKJV

(17) But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also, I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

Paul’s strength did not come from favourable circumstances or reliable human support. It came from the Lord standing with him.

There will be moments when people cannot accompany us into the places where obedience leads. In those moments, the presence of God becomes our strength.

God does not merely give strength so that we can survive. He strengthens us so that His purpose can continue through us.

 SUPERNATURAL EVIDENCE OF GOD’S PRESENCE

John 3:2 NKJV

(2) This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

God’s presence is often demonstrated through works that reveal His power and supremacy.

Nicodemus recognised that the ministry of Jesus could not be explained merely by education, human ability, persuasive speech, or religious position. The works performed through Jesus testified that God was with Him.

Supernatural works do not replace the Word of God, nor do they permit a minister to live without character, accountability, or sound doctrine. Everything must be tested according to Scripture. Nevertheless, the New Testament clearly reveals that God confirms the proclamation of the gospel through demonstrations of His power.

Mark 16:20 NKJV

(20) And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

The disciples preached, but the Lord worked with them.

This is the partnership of ministry. Human vessels obey, but God supplies the power. We speak the Word, but God confirms His truth. We pray, but God heals. We serve, but God transforms. We lay hands upon people, but God releases grace.

Supernatural evidence may include:

Living Your Life from A Place of Complete Focus on Christ.
The Command: Focus on Christ
  • Physical healing
  • Deliverance from demonic oppression
  • Prophetic confirmation
  • Divine intervention
  • Unusual provision
  • Protection from danger
  • Restoration of broken lives
  • Answers to prayer
  • Doors opened by God
  • Conviction that cannot be produced by human persuasion

The purpose of supernatural activity is never to promote a personality. It is to glorify Christ, strengthen faith, reveal God’s compassion, and confirm the message of the Kingdom.

We must also guard against pursuing supernatural experiences while neglecting relationship with God. Power is not a substitute for character. Gifts are not evidence of maturity. Public manifestations cannot replace private obedience.

The safest place for supernatural ministry is within a life surrendered to Christ, grounded in Scripture, governed by love, and submitted to godly accountability.

GOD’S PRESENCE OPENS EYES TO TRUTH

 1 John 1:5 NKJV

(5) This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

God’s presence brings light. Where God’s light shines, darkness is exposed, confusion is challenged, deception is uncovered, and truth becomes visible. Human intelligence alone cannot produce spiritual understanding. We may read the words of Scripture yet fail to perceive their spiritual meaning. We may possess information about God without truly knowing Him. Revelation occurs when the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of our understanding.

Paul experienced this dramatically on the road to Damascus. He was highly educated in religious matters, yet spiritually blind concerning Jesus Christ. When the light of God confronted him, his entire understanding was transformed.

The man who had persecuted the Church became a preacher of the gospel he once opposed.

Divine light does more than provide information. It changes direction.

When our eyes are opened to truth:

  • Wrong beliefs are corrected
  • Hidden motives are exposed
  • Scripture becomes living and clear
  • Christ is revealed more fully
  • Deception loses its influence
  • Spiritual direction becomes clearer
  • Strongholds of confusion are broken
  • Wisdom is released for decisions
  • Identity is established in Christ
  • The will of God becomes discernible

 Ephesians 1:17–18 NKJV

(17) That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

(18) The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.

Paul prayed that believers would receive wisdom and revelation. This demonstrates that spiritual understanding must be cultivated through prayer, humility, obedience, and meditation upon the Word.

God does not release revelation merely to satisfy curiosity. He gives light so that we can walk in truth.

Revelation that does not produce obedience eventually becomes unused information. Genuine illumination changes conduct, priorities, relationships, and decisions.

 NEW MULTITUDES GATHERED

 Isaiah 60:22 NKJV

(22) A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation. I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.

God’s presence draws people to Himself.

True Kingdom increase is not merely the growth of an organisation, platform, brand, or personal following. It is the gathering of people to Christ, their incorporation into His Body, and their development into mature sons who accurately represent Him.

Jesus declared that when He was lifted up, He would draw people to Himself.

 John 12:32 NKJV

(32) And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.

Christ must remain the centre of all genuine spiritual growth.

When a ministry revolves around a personality, people become dependent upon that personality. When a ministry exalts Christ, people are drawn into relationship with Him.

The book of Acts repeatedly connects the presence and activity of God with the increase of the Church.

 Acts 6:7 NKJV

(7) Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Notice that the Word increased, disciples multiplied, and people became obedient to the faith.

This is healthy Kingdom growth. It is not merely about filling seats. It is about forming disciples.

God desires increase in:

  • The number of people coming to Christ
  • The number of mature disciples
  • The number of spiritual sons
  • The number of trained labourers
  • The number of healthy households of faith
  • The number of communities reached
  • The number of nations influenced
  • The measure of Christ formed within believers
  • The expression of righteousness in society

We must pray for people, but we must also prepare to receive, disciple, train, and care for those whom God sends.

It is inconsistent to ask God for a harvest while refusing to develop labourers, structures, relationships, and environments capable of nurturing that harvest.

Spiritual increase requires both prayer and preparation.

 CONSCIENCE AWAKENED

 Acts 2:37 NKJV

(37) Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

When the presence of God accompanies the proclamation of truth, the human heart is confronted.

On the Day of Pentecost, Peter preached Christ clearly. Those who heard him were not merely impressed by his communication. They were pierced inwardly. The Holy Spirit applied the truth personally and exposed their need to respond.

This inward awakening is not the same as condemnation.

Condemnation declares that there is no hope and drives people away from God. The work of the Holy Spirit reveals sin so that people may repent, receive forgiveness, and be restored to fellowship with God.

Genuine conviction produces questions such as:

  • What must I change?
  • Where have I disobeyed God?
  • Whom must I forgive?
  • What must I confess?
  • Which relationship must be restored?
  • What sinful practice must be abandoned?
  • What wrong motive must be surrendered?
  • What truth must I obey?

When Isaiah encountered the holiness of God, he immediately became aware of his own condition.

 Isaiah 6:5 NKJV

(5) So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

Isaiah did not compare himself with other people. In the presence of God, human comparisons became irrelevant. He saw himself in the light of God’s holiness.

The presence of God exposes the following:

  • Hidden sin
  • Pride
  • Hypocrisy
  • Self-righteousness
  • Unforgiveness
  • Manipulation
  • Wrong motives
  • Secret compromise
  • Religious pretence
  • Disobedience

Exposure is not intended to humiliate the repentant. It is intended to cleanse and restore.

We should never fear the light of God. Whatever God reveals, He is willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, and transform when we respond with humility and repentance.

A healthy Church is not a place where sin is hidden to protect reputations. It is a community where truth is welcomed, repentance is practised, forgiveness is proclaimed, and righteousness is restored.

 ESCAPE FROM BONDAGE

 2 Corinthians 3:17 NKJV

(17) Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

God’s presence brings freedom.

This freedom is not permission to live according to the flesh. Biblical liberty is the power to become free from sin, deception, fear, oppression, destructive habits, and every yoke that prevents obedience to God.

A person is not truly free merely because there are no external restrictions. Many people appear outwardly independent while remaining inwardly bound by fear, rejection, lust, bitterness, addiction, insecurity, pride, or the opinions of others.

The Holy Spirit brings freedom at the deepest level.

Jesus connected freedom with truth.

 John 8:31–32 NKJV

(31) Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.

(32) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Truth must be known, received, and obeyed.

Freedom is not produced by a momentary emotional experience alone. It is maintained by abiding in the Word, renewing the mind, resisting temptation, submitting to God, walking in the Spirit, and remaining connected to healthy covenant relationships.

God desires to break the following:

  • The yoke of sin
  • The bondage of fear
  • The chains of addiction
  • The control of rejection
  • The prison of bitterness
  • The power of deception
  • The grip of shame
  • The oppression of the enemy
  • The cycle of destructive behaviour
  • The limitations of damaged mindsets

The presence of God does not merely remove chains. It empowers people to live responsibly after the chains have been removed.

Freedom must lead to obedience, service, maturity, and accurate representation of Christ.

God sets sons free so that they can fulfil their assignments, serve others, advance His Kingdom, and demonstrate His glory in the earth.

CULTIVATING A LIFE THAT HOSTS GOD

These effects that we see should not be treated as isolated spiritual experiences. They are interconnected.

  • Where God is honoured, lives begin to flourish.
  • Where His holiness is recognised, respectful awe is restored.
  • Where people wait upon Him, inner strength is renewed.
  • Where the gospel is proclaimed in faith, divine power confirms His Word.
  • Where His light shines, spiritual understanding increases.
  • Where Christ is exalted, people are drawn to Him.
  • Where truth is preached, consciences are awakened.
  • Where the Holy Spirit governs, bondage is broken.

However, hosting God’s presence requires more than attending a gathering. It demands a lifestyle of surrender.

We cultivate sensitivity to His presence through:

  1. Consistent Prayer

Prayer turns the heart toward God. It creates room for communion, correction, instruction, and spiritual strengthening.

  1. Meditation upon Scripture

The Holy Spirit does not lead contrary to the written Word. Scripture provides the standard by which experiences, revelations, prophecies, and spiritual impressions must be tested.

  1. Obedience

The presence of God is not cultivated by emotional desire alone. Obedience demonstrates that we value God’s will above our own preferences.

  1. Repentance

Unconfessed sin hardens the heart and dulls spiritual sensitivity. Repentance restores openness, honesty, and fellowship with God.

  1. Worship

Worship directs affection, gratitude, honour, and attention toward God. It reminds us that He is the centre and we are His servants.

  1. Holiness

We cannot sincerely ask God to manifest His presence while deliberately protecting practices that contradict His nature.

  1. Fellowship

God reveals Himself within the gathered Body of Christ. Isolation deprives believers of encouragement, correction, accountability, and corporate strength.

  1. Honour

We must honour God, His Word, His Spirit, His people, and the grace He places within others. Dishonour creates resistance to what God desires to release.

CONCLUSION: BECOME A CARRIER OF HIS PRESENCE

God desires more than occasional visitation. He desires habitation.

He is looking for individuals, households, and churches in which His character, authority, wisdom, love, holiness, and power can be revealed consistently.

The world does not merely need better religious programmes. It needs a people who have encountered God and been transformed by Him.

Our families need more than religious language; they need the peace and order produced by God’s presence.

Our churches need more than activity; they need spiritual strength, purity, revelation, power, and mature discipleship.

Our cities need more than political promises; they need righteous people who carry wisdom, justice, compassion, integrity, and Kingdom solutions.

Our nations need more than human optimism; they need the light and glory of God revealed through a mature Body of Christ.

Let us not pursue the benefits of God’s presence while resisting the government of God’s presence.

Let us welcome the One who causes lives to flourish, restores holy awe, strengthens weak hearts, confirms His Word, opens blind eyes, gathers multitudes, awakens consciences, and breaks oppressive chains.

CALL TO ACTION

Set aside intentional time this week to examine the spiritual atmosphere of your life and household.

Ask yourself:

  • Is my life becoming more fruitful because of my fellowship with God?
  • Have I maintained a deep respect for the holiness of the Lord?
  • Am I drawing strength from God or depending entirely upon human support?
  • Do I believe that God still confirms His Word through His power?
  • Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to correct my understanding?
  • Am I helping people become disciples of Christ?
  • Is my conscience still tender when God exposes something in me?
  • Am I walking in the freedom Christ has provided?

STEPS TO TAKE:

  1. Identify the area in which you most urgently need the work of God. Bring it before Him honestly.
  2. Repent where repentance is required.
  3. Forgive where forgiveness is necessary.
  4. Remove anything that continually grieves the Holy Spirit.
  5. Then begin to pray over your household, the Household of Faith, your city, and your nation.
  6. Do not merely ask God to visit you.
  7. Prepare your heart to host Him.
  8. Do not merely speak about His presence.
  9. Live in a manner that reveals His presence.
  10. Do not merely seek an experience.

Become a faithful carrier of His nature, truth, holiness, compassion, authority, and power.

May your life become a visible testimony that the Lord is with you.
