HOW LOVE MAKES YOUR LIGHT SHINE

LOVE: THE RADIANCE OF LOVING GOD

INTRODUCTION TO LOVE

Love is one of the most spoken about subjects in Scripture, yet often one of the most misunderstood. Many associate love with emotion, affection, or worship expressed through words and songs, but biblical love reaches far deeper. True love for God produces visible evidence—it transforms the heart, shapes our relationships, governs our obedience, and reveals the very nature of Christ through our lives. Scripture teaches that those who love God shine with His light, reflecting His glory in a dark world. This article explores how love produces spiritual radiance through loving others, obeying God’s Word, virtuous living, expressive worship, and sacrificial devotion, revealing Christ in and through us.

LOVE PRODUCES RADIANCE

There is a divine radiance that flows from genuine love. Scripture reveals that when we truly love God, His light becomes visible in and through our lives. Love is not merely emotional affection or heartfelt songs sung during worship. Loving God is a transformative relationship that shapes how we live, how we treat others, and how we reflect Christ to the world.

Judges 5:31 NKJV

(31)  “Thus let all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But let those who love Him be like the sun When it comes out in full strength.” So the land had rest for forty years.

The Bible paints a powerful picture: those who love God shine like the sun in full strength. Love is not hidden—it produces visible evidence. It illuminates our relationships, our obedience, our character, our worship, and our sacrifice.

So what does it mean to love God?

LOVING OTHERS: THE EVIDENCE OF DIVINE LIGHT

1 John 2:9-10 NKJV

(9)  He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.

(10)  He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.

Love for others reveals the radiance of Christ.

Scripture leaves no room for contradiction—we cannot claim to love God while harbouring hatred toward others.

1 John 4:20-21 NKJV

(20)  If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

(21)  And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

This scripture clearly teaches us that love for God and love for people are inseparable. When we genuinely love one another, the invisible God becomes visible because His love is perfected in us.

1 John 4:12-13 NKJV

(12)  No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.

(13)  By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.

Hatred, bitterness, and division darken the soul, but love reveals Christ.

We see this truth beautifully illustrated in Jacob’s life. Before being reconciled to Esau, Jacob encountered God at Peniel—the “face of God.” Scripture records that as he crossed over, the sun rose upon him.

Genesis 32:30-31 NKJV

(30)  So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

(31)  Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.

Reconciliation and divine radiance appeared together.

Likewise, Stephen’s face shone like an angel while he extended grace toward those persecuting him.

Acts 6:15 NKJV

(15)  And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

Love and radiance walked hand in hand.

Perhaps one of the clearest indicators of spiritual maturity is not how loudly we worship, but how deeply we love.

OBEYING THE WORD: LOVE PROVEN THROUGH OBEDIENCE

Doctrine of Obedience
Doctrine of Obedience

John 14:23 NKJV

(23)  Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

Love is not merely spoken—it is demonstrated.

Jesus made this profoundly clear: obedience is the evidence of love.

1 John 5:3 NKJV

(3)  For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

Loving God means keeping His commandments. When the Word moves beyond intellectual understanding and becomes lived obedience, it produces spiritual illumination.

Psalms 119:130 NKJV

(130)  The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

Moses experienced this reality firsthand. In obedience to God’s command, he ascended the mountain and remained in God’s presence. When he descended, his face shone with divine glory.

Exodus 34:29 NKJV

(29)  Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.

Jesus Himself perfectly modelled this truth. His unwavering obedience to the Father revealed the glory within Him, culminating in the Mount of Transfiguration where His face shone like the sun.

Matthew 17:2 NKJV

(2)  and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

Obedience removes resistance to divine light.  Disobedience, however, brings confusion and spiritual darkness.

Deuteronomy 28:29 NKJV

(29)  And you shall grope at noonday, as a blind man gropes in darkness; you shall not prosper in your ways; you shall be only oppressed and plundered continually, and no one shall save you.

Deuteronomy 28:29 describes the tragic consequence of losing direction when walking outside God’s will.

The Christian life is not merely about knowing truth—it is about obeying truth.

VIRTUOUS LIVING: PROTECTING THE RADIANCE

 Philippians 2:14-15 NKJV

(14)  Do all things without complaining and disputing,

PRACTICAL RIGHTEOUSNESS
PRACTICAL RIGHTEOUSNESS

(15)  that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

Virtuous living protects our radiance.

Love refuses whatever distorts the image of Christ and embraces whatever reflects His nature.

Romans 12:9 NKJV

(9)  Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

1 Corinthians 13:6 NKJV

(6)  does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

Purity and righteousness are not legalistic burdens; they are guardians of spiritual light.

Joseph understood this principle. Faced with temptation, he fled compromise and preserved his purity. As a result, God’s favour upon his life became visible, and he emerged as a light in Egypt.

Job described a season when God’s lamp shone upon his head and guided him through darkness.

Job 29:3 NKJV

(3)  When His lamp shone upon my head, And when by His light I walked through darkness;

Divine illumination accompanied righteous living.

Jesus taught that “the righteous will shine forth as the sun”

Matthew 13:43 NKJV

(43)  Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Defilement darkens, but righteousness radiates.  The path of the righteous grows brighter.

Proverbs 4:18-19 NKJV

(18)  But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.

(19)  The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble.

Compromise leads into increasing darkness

Ephesians 5:8-11 NKJV

(8)  For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

(9)  (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),

(10)  finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.

(11)  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

The world does not merely need louder voices—it needs brighter lives.

EXPRESSIVE WORSHIP: LOVE MADE VISIBLE

1 Peter 2:9 NKJV

(9)  But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Expressive worship is love made visible.

Praise, thanksgiving, and wholehearted devotion allow God’s light to shine through us for His glory.

Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV

(14)  “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

(15)  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

(16)  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Worship is not performance—it is affection expressed toward God.

The woman with the alabaster box poured out costly love upon Jesus. Her worship filled the room with fragrance, and Jesus testified that she “loved much”.

Living your life from a place of deep intimacy with the Lord Jesus. A place where He is your only passion.
LOVING GOD

 Luke 7:44-47 NKJV

(44)  Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.

(45)  You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.

(46)  You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

(47)  Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

Her devotion transformed the atmosphere.

David likewise worshipped without restraint before the Lord because love outweighed public opinion.

2 Samuel 6:14-15 NKJV

(14)  Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.

(15)  So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.

In contrast, Michal’s disdain and distance led to barrenness.

2 Samuel 6:16 NKJV

(16)  Now as the ark of the LORD came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

2 Samuel 6:20-23 NKJV

(20)  Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”

(21)  So David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD.

(22)  And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”

(23)  Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

Unthankfulness darkens the heart, but praise illuminates it.

Worship is not merely something we do in church—it is the overflow of a heart captivated by God.

 SACRIFICIAL LIVING: LOVE IN ACTION

Isaiah 58:10 NKJV

(10)  If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.

Sacrificial living is love made visible.

The cross reveals love in action, while the resurrection reveals love in glory. True love places Christ above comfort, convenience, and self-interest.

Isaiah teaches that when we pour ourselves out for others, our light breaks forth in darkness.

BROKENNESS DEMONSTRATE A SACRIFICIAL LIFE

 Isaiah 58:7-10 NKJV

(7)  Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

(8)  Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

(9)  Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.‘ “If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

(10)  If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.

Sacrifice releases radiance.

Daniel exemplified this consecrated life. He refused defilement and carried an excellent spirit because his devotion to God outweighed cultural compromise.

Daniel 1:8 NKJV

(8)  But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Paul echoed this same reality:

 Galatians 2:20 NKJV

(20)  I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Love dethrones self.

Judges 5 contrasts those who actively participated in God’s purposes with those who remained indifferent. Love was proven through participation, and Scripture declares that those who love Him are “like the sun when it comes out in full strength.”

Sacrificial obedience produces visible radiance.  The world sees Christ most clearly in believers who are wholly yielded to Him.

Shine Through Love

Love is not sentimental—it is transformational.

It shines through relationships, obedience, purity, worship, and sacrifice. When we love God genuinely, His light becomes unmistakable in us.

The call of Scripture is clear: love God, love people, obey His Word, walk in righteousness, worship wholeheartedly, and live sacrificially.

Then, like the sun rising in full strength, Christ will be seen through our lives.
